Our club was established in the year 1922. Ours is one of the most traditional and oldest clubs in the State, having been registered under the Societies Registration Act 1961, and affiliated to the State Parent Bodies like - Indian Football Association, Cricket Association of Bengal, Bengal Hockey Association, West Bengal Volleyball Association. This is quite worth - mentioning that we are playing in the “First division” of all the diciplines our club is associted with.
Across the huge shadow of the Eden Gardens, sitting on the grren grass of maidan, there is an enclosed ground. One of the three enclosed grounds in Calcutta. The area is teeming in sporting history. Because Indian sports was born somewhere here.
This ground is home for us, at The Howrah Union Club.
Orginally from the neighbouring town of Howrah, the club became and integral part of Calcutta Sports when they pitched their tent at the Maidan alongside the other illustrious clubs that began the sporting tradition in the city. Having leased the area from the Indian army, the club went from strength to strength till it was one of the major football teams in the Calcutta League.
The club threw upon the Indian spoting arena many stalwarts who wrote history in national and international events. We have always hunted heroes. It has been the legacy of the club to dedicate itself towards nurturing and crafting young local talent.
Today, as it stands regally in the era of change, the club looks into the future with hope. Technically and spiritually, sports could now be a more secure and professional carrier. With more and more children are taking games, not just as a hobby, but also as a strong part of their lives.
We need to tap this reserve, and find the heroes.
